What Can LASIK Correct?

Correct Your Nearsightedness, Farsightedness or Astigmatism

LASIK technology is used to correct refractive errors, including myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism:

  • Myopia: A person will have blurry distance vision when the eye is too long or when the eye lens is too steeply curved, causing light rays focus in front of the retina.
  • Hyperopia: A person will have blurry close-up vision when the eye is too short or when the eye lens is too flat, causing light rays focus beyond the retina.
  • Astigmatism: A person will have both close-up and distance vision that is distorted when the eyes are football-shaped, so there is no single point of focus for light rays.

Simply having one of these conditions does not automatically mean LASIK can correct your vision. There are many different factors that are taken into consideration before you can be given the green light for the procedure. This is one of the reasons why you still see people wearing glasses.


LASIK and Reading Glasses

In 2010 an estimated 122 million Americans had presbyopia, according to the US Census Bureau.

Presbyopia is the natural stiffening and thickening of the eye lenses, which often begins to occur in adults over age 40. This condition makes it difficult for people to see clearly close-up because the lenses become less elastic. Presbyopia causes people to need reading glasses in dimly lit restaurants, while reading books and while working on the computer.

LASIK surgery cannot completely treat presbyopia. However, it is possible to use Monovision techniques to correct one eye for distance and one eye for near vision to tackle the presbyopia issue from a different angle.

It’s important to note that you may develop a need for reading glasses in the future - even after LASIK.

20/20 Vision Defined

LASIK has helped millions of Americans (more than 14 million!) correct their vision and many see with 20/20 vision (or better) after the procedure. But what does 20/20 vision actually mean?

  • Having 20/20 vision means that you have "normal" clear, sharp vision. It means you can see something clearly from 20 feet away that a person with "normal" vision can see at that distance.
  • If you have 20/40 vision, this means that you must stand 20 feet away from something to see it as clearly as a person with "normal" vision would see at 40 feet away. (Your vision is worse than normal.)
  • If you have 20/10 vision, you can stand 20 feet away from something and see it as clearly as a person with “normal” vision would see at 10 feet away. (Your vision is better than normal.)
